Boys & Girls Clubs of America
The Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) serves 4.73 million kids at more than 4,500 clubs and youth centers in the U.S. and on military installations around the world. The mission of the BGCA is to enable at-risk youth “to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.” Clubs provide young people with a safe place to congregate outside of school hours. According to the nonprofit’s 2018 National Outcomes Report, 70% of 12th graders in the BGCA say they volunteer at least once a month and about half of alumni say the organization saved their life.
Wounded Warriors Project
A wounded warrior is service member who incurred a mental or physical injury or illness any time on or after September 11, 2001. Since 2003, the mission of the Wounded Warriors Project (WWP) is to increase public awareness and raise money to fund programs for severely injured service members. The WWP helps address the needs of warriors, their families and caregivers through free services, including programs for physical and mental health and wellness, career counseling, and lifetime support for the most severely injured warriors.
The Wounded Warrior Project has met the BBB’s standards of a Give.org accredited charity. For three years running, Charity Navigator has given WWP an overall rating of 3 stars. They also received a GuideStar Platinum Seal of Transparency.
Feeding America is the largest hunger-relief organization in the country. Staff and volunteers aim to end hunger and provide all communities with food security. “We work to get nourishing food–from farmers, manufacturers, and retailers–to people in need.” The Feeding America Network is in every state, plus Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico. It consists of 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries and meal programs. Feeding America also works to eliminate barriers preventing certain populations from accessing healthy food, educate the public about hunger in the U.S. and advocate for legislation to end hunger. In 2018, Feeding America distributed more than 3.6 billion meals.
American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society (ACS) is dedicated to curing and eliminating cancer around the world. The nonprofit has raised hundreds of millions of dollars, mostly through private donations, and uses it to fund and conduct research, provide support to patients and families, and raise awareness about cancer prevention. In 2018, 78% of ACS resources were invested in research, patient support, prevention, detection and treatment. Since 1946, the organization has spent more than $4.9 billion on research.
American Humane Society
The American Humane Society is dedicated to protecting animals. Staff and volunteers work to ensure the safety, welfare and well-being of pets and animals on farms, in zoos, and in the wild. They also work to strengthen the bonds between people and animals.
American Humane Society was awarded 4 stars by Charity Navigator for two consecutive years and they earned a Gold Seal of Transparency by GuideStar. American Humane was given an A+ and named a “Top-Rated Charity” by CharityWatch.
Charity Rating Services
Charity Navigator is the largest independent charity watchdog in the U.S. The organization uses objective, data-driven analysis to rate organizations. A 4-star review “exceeds industry standards and outperforms most charities in its Cause.” A 3-star rating exceeds or meets industry standards and performs as well or better than those in the same category.
Give.org is the website of the Better Business Bureau (BBB) Wise Giving Alliance. The site helps the public make informed decisions about charitable donations. The BBB WGA is not a charity-ranking service, “but rather, seeks to assist donors in making informed judgments about those that solicit their support.”
The American Institute of Philanthropy’s CharityWatch is an independent charity monitor. They also protect donors’ interests by exposing nonprofit abuses.
